A battered teal watering can stands on a rough wooden crate, and before it a tangle of ginger roots twists into knuckled little shapes. Wiedijk renders the chipped enamel, the splintered plank and the pale, papery ginger skin with equal patience. The roots seem to crawl, half vegetable, half creature, which is the quiet charm of the thing.
