Gemberwortels (Ginger Roots)

A sprawling cluster of ginger roots crowds a stone ledge above a scuffed red crate. Wiedijk follows every knuckle and ring of the pale, papery skin, the knobbled tubers branching almost like coral. An ordinary kitchen root given the patience usually saved for porcelain.
