Pirus communis

Six russeted pears piled on a pale shelf stamped PIRUS COMMUNIS, the Latin name of the common pear. The lettering works like the old cartellino, a painted label folded into the scene, while above it the fruit ripens from green into freckled gold. A simple, learned little joke, beautifully kept.
