Gerookte bokking (Smoked Herring)

Two smoked fish lie heaped on a white cloth, their skins burnished to old gold. The crinkled folds of linen set off the oily sheen of the catch. The fish stall pieces of the Golden Age made this their subject, freshness and decay held in one breath.
