Aardbeien (Strawberries)

A white enamel bowl heaped with strawberries, a few tumbled onto a cloth of white cutwork lace, their red glowing against all that white. The seeds and soft sheen of each berry are caught exactly, ripe to the point of sweetness. Beneath the charm runs the old, quiet note that such ripeness will not keep.
