Boatman (self-portrait)

In this self-portrait Wiedijk pictures himself as a Renaissance explorer, in a characteristic ruff, standing in a model sailing ship, a symbol of his own journey through life and his fascination with discovery. Behind him a sail carries a world map, and below the ship sit dolls in traditional costume, peaceful at first glance but pointing to the impact of exploration and colonisation, much like the map of Suriname ringed with spices and gold. High on the wall a caged bird watches over it all, a jackdaw, the bird that steals anything that glitters, perched above the treasure as a mirror of the collector himself. Butterflies and green leaves drift through the scene as signs of change and growth, while his calm expression holds it all in place. The overall image exudes a peaceful atmosphere, but the details reveal the deeper, often conflicting realities of the real world. This painting is a layered portrait of Wiedijk's inner world, his interests and his journey, inviting you to keep looking at the many symbols woven through it.
