Visjes (Little Fish)

A small bundle of smoked fish bound with crossed string, with one more laid loose in front, their silver flanks shot through with gold and bronze. The old Dutch fish-stall pieces traded on exactly this, the wet shimmer of fresh catch and the hint of its short life. Modest food, painted like treasure.
