Marken

The lighthouse of Marken stands on its little stone spit, a white tower with a red lantern beside a green-and-white keeper's house, against calm water and a wide soft sky. This is the Paard van Marken, built in 1839 on what was then an island in the Zuiderzee. Wiedijk holds it all in still, clear light, every tile and ripple in place.
