Mist (Fog)

A pale, near-monochrome dreamworld dissolving in fog, elephant-trunked figures in ruffs meeting across a stony stream, a faint rainbow at the edge. The soft, half-formed handling belongs to the Symbolist Odilon Redon, who wanted the logic of the visible to serve the invisible and called his shadowy dream-images his noirs. Here the fog is not a setting but the subject, forms forever surfacing and fading. It is the one canvas where Wiedijk withholds the punchline, a painting about fog that is itself fogged, and the not-quite-seeing is the whole experience.
