A woman whose head has become a pale morel walks with a cane through a world built entirely of swollen fungus-domes, a cat watching from a stalk. Swapping a head for an object is the signature trick of René Magritte; setting it loose in an overgrown garden is pure Bosch. Mushrooms have always led a double life, food and poison, decay and fertility, and the visionary toadstool is woven through folklore and old hallucinations. Wiedijk's tiny walker, dwarfed by a fungal world gone enormous, is a fairy tale with the sweetness drained out, beautiful and just disorienting enough to keep you off balance.
