Vissen op schaal (Fish on a Plate)

A plate of fresh whiting and mackerel, their silver bodies still bright, beside a blue speckled enamel canister on a draped cloth. The fish-stall pieces of the Golden Age loved exactly this, the wet gleam of scales and the reminder that freshness will not keep. The skin is painted until it almost slips off the plate.
