Wijnproevers (Wine Tasters)

Two riders on white llamas face each other across a microphone, one all in teal on a chequered cloth, the other in red and white stripes, each holding a glass of wine, each carrying a little larder of bottles and a lantern in his colour. Behind them rises a vast green wall of carved faces, a whole crowd of idols laughing, dozing and staring, with jellyfish drifting down over their heads. It is theatrical and gloriously strange, two solemn contestants performing before a frozen, grinning audience. There is no telling what the duel is really about, and that is the joy of it, a ceremony from a dream where the crowd is stone and the judges are jellyfish.
