THE DOORS
A series apart, painted with the same fijnschilder patience as the still lifes but turned on the weathered doors of barns and stables. Old planks bleached and split, paint flaking from blue or green, set in arches of brick and stone, each one a study in the texture of aged wood and the fall of sunlight across it. Almost every door has a single humble object resting at its foot, a bucket, an enamel jug, a stool, so that even a closed gate becomes a quiet still life.
